character
A design could be very subtly quiet and discreet, as in minimalist work, or it could be garish and loud, or shouting, as in some of the more recently well received work of Frank Gehry or Zaha Hadid. This would be called character, or personality, often depicted as style. it is when a design is neither one or the other that it becomes mainstream and worst mediocre.
